Excess sugar suppresses immunity. Studies have found that drinking75 to 100 grams of a sugar solution (about 20 teaspoons of sugar, or the amount that is contained in two average 12-ounce sodas) can suppress the immune system.

A study, using dental students, showed that drinking 24 oz of soda depressed the activity of neutrophils (the white blood cells responsible for fighting infection) by 50 percent.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that people who drank a ton of soda exhibited shorter telomeres in immune cells. Telomeres are protective DNA units that are situated at the ends of chromosomes. Shorter telomeres meant that their risk of dying sooner was higher.

Sugary beverages like soda can lead to weight gain. Drinking an extra can of soda per day was linked to more than two pounds gained over the study period compare to those that had less soda overall. The study found that  people who drank them regularly had an increased body mass index.

The study could only show associations between soda consumption and weight gain, not cause-and-effect.

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)

It’s no secret that most sodas contain extremely large amounts of high-fructose corn syrup which is way worse for you than regular sugar.

Studies conducted by Princeton researchers showed that rats given access to HFCS for 6 months became obese and demonstrated signs of metabolic syndrome, while rats fed regular sugar did not.
