A small puppy, chained to a seat and unable to walk, wondering when his folks would return. But the dog realized something was wrong as he peered cautiously as the swarm of strangers gathered around him.

When Marcela Goldberg received a message about the dog that had been abandoned on a street median, she raced over with fellow rescuer Azul Galindo. She wasn’t shocked because there had been so many more dogs abandoned in her community since the outbreak began.

“Several neighbors had already gathered who had brought him water and food because they had left him chained to the bench with nothing,” Goldberg told The Dodo. “However, they were unable to approach the puppy because it was afraid, snarling and snipping.”

A message, weighted down by a boulder, lay next to the golden retriever mix. The message stated:

“Hello, Please adopt me, Max. I respectfully request that you adopt this adorable puppy and take good care of him. It pains a lot to leave my dog here, but I took the decision to leave him since my family used to abuse him and seeing him in that state always saddened me. If you’re reading this and your heart wavers, please adopt him and take good care of him. If not, please leave this note in its place. That way others can read it and adopt him. Thank you.”

Even the fragrance of food didn’t calm or divert the dog as Goldberg approached him. “I donned safety gloves to give myself more confidence, but it was still challenging,” Goldberg added. “We contacted an aggressive dog trainer who monitored the incident through video conference and offered me suggestions until we were able to pass the loop [over his head] and cut the other chain.”

The dog’s demeanor altered as soon as the chain was severed. He was still terrified, but he was no longer growling at his rescuers. Goldberg gradually began to pat him in the car, and the dog had calmed down by the time they arrived at the shelter.

Boston, the 7-month-old puppy, is gradually learning to trust people and let his lively nature come through

“He is gentle and friendly, and he enjoys giving kisses and playing with the ball that the vet gave him,” Goldberg added.

Boston has evolved into a completely new dog just a few days after being rescued. His rescuers are now assessing adoption applications to ensure that he goes to the finest family possible — one where he will never have to fear again.
