Crisco  was introduced in June 1911 by Procter & Gamble; it was the first shortening to be made entirely of vegetable oil (cottonseed). It was the time when women stayed home and cooked with mostly butter and lard. The challenge for Crisco was to convince these women to switch to this shortening. So Proctor and Gamble’s  came up with the brilliant marketing campaign for the original Crisco, an alternative to lard, as “It’s all vegetable! It’s digestible!”

However, Crisco is, perhaps, one of the worst foods you can use even though the original formula made with he cottonseed oil has been replaced with hydrogenated, genetically modified omega-6 rich soybean oil and fully hydrogenated palm oil.
