When animals have very serious medical problems that are too costly to treat, rescue shelters would usually euthanize them.
However, Joe Kirk understands very well that all dogs have to be cured, adopted and loved. So when the beagle named Gregory was about to be euthanized in the shelter, Joe arrived at the right time to rescue this dog.
Joe and his wife, Schenley Hutson-Kirk, are co-founders of Hound Rescue and Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit organization based near Findlay, Ohio. Their rescue center helps the strays and neglected dogs to find their new homes and provides lifelong sanctuary to ‘unadoptable and senior’ canines, with primary mission of saving dogs from euthanasia by taking them in from ‘high risk and kill shelters’.
Two days before Gregory was scheduled to be put to sleep, Joe turned up like an angel to saved the dog from the animal shelter that was going to put it down.
Gregory was diagnosed with heartworm disease, which was the reason he will be euthanized. Heartworm disease is caused by foot-long worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of the dog. The dog will later show signs such as weight loss, fatigue, decreased appetite, reluctance to exercise, a mild persistent cough, a swollen abdomen, and heart failure.
As Gregory understands that Joe saves it and has given it a second chance in life, Gregory rewarded the kindhearted man with a warm adorable hug.
That is most probably Gregory’s way of saying thank you to Joe for saving its life!
According to Joe, Gregory has started his recovery journey as it is now receiving veterinary care as well as the heartworm treatment it required.
